Folegandros Chora

The quintessential Greek hideaway of Folegandros

Why Come?
With its beautiful main town, picturesque houses and secluded coves, Folegandros offers the ideal Greek hideaway. However, as is so often the way, this fantastic island in the southern Cyclades is not the easiest to reach. Remote and rocky, it has no airport and no package tours.

Nightlife
Chora comes alive at night. Start the evening with an aperitif and a simple dinner in an outdoor restaurant, then head to one of the many bars. Folegandros has a fantastic bar scene, famous for its live music. There is often dancing till dawn and always a bar to go to in the harbour for an early breakfast

What to do
Folegandros is situated in the Southern Cyclades, between Sikinos and Milos. It is only 13 km long and 4 km wide but has numerous small beaches which can be reached by car, by local bus, by foot or by little fishing boats departing daily from the port. There are pebble beaches at Karavostassi and Livadi. The island's finest beaches are sandy Angali and Katergo. Other good beaches are Agios Nikolaos and Livadaki, both north-west of Angali, and Agios Georgios, which is north-west of Ano Meria. A path from Ano Meria's Church of Agios Andreas leads to Agios Georgios beach. The main road leading from Karavostasi port to Chora and Ano Meria is shorter than 10 km. Chora ends on a cliff, where there is a marvellous view over the Aegean Sea. The island also offers an underwater paradise for scuba divers.

When to come
The spring (May, June, July) and autumn (September, Octomber) are the best times to visit as the heat is not too overbearing and there are fewer tourists then. The summers are very hot and the strong meltemi wind blows over the Cyclades in August.

How to reach it:
Folegandros is a main stop on the ferry line Santorini - Milos - Piraeus (usually 4 weekly stopovers), but it also has frequent ferries hydrofoils and Catamaran to Milos, Ios, the near Sikinos and other islands, though the exact list of interconnected islands and timetable changes from year to year.
You can find more about the Ferries schedule at www.gtp.gr
As Folegandros has no airport, the only way to reach the island is by boat. If you are traveling from abroad first fly to Santorini. The boats from here are less crowded and less expensive than the tourist boats.

Tickets:
Tickets can be purchased only at the Chora by the Tourist Office Maraki Travel (Tel 0030.22860.41273)
The island has a post office,  no bank, just a bank distributor. Tourist Offices do change.

Inland transportation
The bus is the main transportation mean of Folegandros, to take you either to the port or to the various unpaved roads that lead to the beaches. Also, to reach the various beaches little fishing boats depart daily form the port of Karavostasi.
Cars, motorcycles and bikes rent is available.
Banks: remember no bank! You may use a cash machine (bancomat) in the Chora or change travellers' checks at the post office.
Rentals: bikes, motorbikes and cars are rented.
